What is Direct Patient Care?
Direct Patient Care (DPC) is a model of healthcare delivery that seeks to restore the doctor-patient relationship. This model of care is patterned after the way healthcare was delivered before the advent of corporatized medicine, when large organizations and big business entered into healthcare. The Direct Patient Care model is founded on the belief that there is significant value for patients in having a doctor and patient know each other, a doctor that patients can reach when needed, a doctor with significant clinical expertise who works for the patient, and not for an organization or insurance company. In this model, the patient contracts specifically with their doctor, using their healthcare insurance for tests, procedures, consultants and hospitalizations.
How does this work?
For a flat reasonable monthly fee (less than most cell phone bills) patients receive unlimited office visits with no co-pays and direct access to their physician. Most urgent visits are seen within 24 hours. There are unlimited telephone calls and text messaging with the physician. Visits are longer, giving patients the time they need to solve their problems or come up with a plan of care. Simple on site laboratory tests are free, or offered at a considerable discount. Despite being in this practice, patients can still use their healthcare insurance for costly tests, treatments, hospitalizations, consultants, etc. Every year, patients receive a comprehensive annual physical examination and plan of care that focuses on prevention, wellness and longevity that is tailored to their personal health needs. We have significantly fewer patients, leaving more time to be available for you.
Does Avanti DPC accept Insurance?
No. We believe insurance drives prices significantly higher. Insurance companies disincentivize physicians from providing care. And, they offer a fundamental conflict of interest, coming in between the patient and their physician. Avanti DPC membership means no deductibles, timely visits and catching problems before they reach levels requiring higher level care. Patients save money using direct primary care by not having to pay deductibles and by having immediate access to their physician’s guidance, avoiding unnecessary trips to the emergency room and unnecessary testing. Therefore, many people who get care through Avanti DPC practices choose lower cost high deductible insurance plans, which can save considerable money spent on healthcare insurance.
What happens if I need to see a specialist?
We will work with specialists and hospitalists to coordinate your care and help in complex decision-making. We will also work with you to help find the most cost-effective way to get diagnostic testing and medications. Patients can use their insurance for specialists and any outside testing.
If I have medicare, Can i join Avanti DPC?
Yes. Medicare will still cover any hospitalizations, surgeries, laboratory studies and medications ordered by our office.
Is Avanti for me if i am healthy now?
Yes! Unfortunately our healthcare system actually benefits from services patients receive when they get sick. At our office, being proactive and thorough - seeing you sooner rather than later – will help catch and treat preventable problems. Most importantly, the benefits of having someone who knows you and your medical history, as well as what you value in your healthcare, allows you to have an advocate when you need it the most. We believe in a focus on wellness; seeking ways to promote healthy, active, long lives.
